VERNADSKY NATIONAL LIBRARY OF UKRAINE

Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine is the largest library in Ukraine in terms of the number of volumes and area of ​​premises. It consists of 15 million books and is in the top 20 largest national book collections in the world. It was founded in 1918 as a library of the newly established country Ukraine. Originally, it was located in one of the rooms of the Ministry of Education of the Ukrainian People's Republic.

Nowadays, the main building of the library is a 27-storey Soviet skyscraper, built in 1976-1989 on an area of ​​3 hectares. Air conditioning units maintain optimal temperature and humidity, air exchange is carried out three times per hour  and the ceilings of the halls are equipped with special lanterns.

  • The first of the well-known libraries of Kyivan Rus was assembled by Prince Yaroslav the Wise. It was founded in 1037 at the St. Sophia Cathedral and now no one knows what happened with it.

  • Nowadays there are many modern forms of book exchange in Kyiv. For instance, the first book crossing appeared in the “Cupid” club on Pushkinska Str. You can find it also in different bookstores, parks and even in the subway, just go to Zoloti Vorota or Politekhnichnyi Instytut stations.
